Growing up, oxtail was never an everyday meal. For a lot of families back home it was something you couldn't afford to buy all the time.
It got cooked once in a while — Sunday dinner, a celebration, or when you wanted to make something extra special. That's what oxtail meant. It wasn't the cheap thing on the stove. It was the thing you saved for.
So when people come to Canada and expect oxtail to be cheap, it's worth remembering where it came from and what it costs today. Oxtail is a premium cut. The price reflects the product, the preparation, the time and the quality — not just the meat on the plate.
What we do differently at 9 Mile
We take it further than most. Nothing about our oxtail is rushed — it goes in the pot and it stays there, low and slow, until the meat gives up and falls off the bone on its own.
That's hours of stove time before a single order goes out. Tender, rich, heavy with gravy. You can't fast-track it and you can't fake it.
And once it's ready, we don't stop at one dish. We infuse that oxtail right across the menu:
- Oxtail patties — the Double Ox, and the Oxtail Patty with the sides built in
- Oxtail loaded mac & cheese
- Wings Oxtail Loaded — jumbo wings buried in it
- Oxtail quesadillas
- Oxtail plates, bowls, Big Box and the Oxtail Papi platter
- Heavy Plate combos pairing oxtail with jerk pork, curry goat or chicken
"This isn't just meat on a plate. It's time. It's preparation. It's flavour. It's a premium product made with love. We're not trying to make oxtail cheap — we're trying to make every penny you spend on it worth it."
— Chris, Co-Owner, 9 MileWhy the price is the price
Three things drive it, and none of them are negotiable if you want it done right:
- The cut. Oxtail is one of the most expensive proteins a Caribbean kitchen buys, and it has been climbing for years. There's not much of it on an animal, and the whole world figured out how good it is.
- The shrink. Bone, fat and hours of cooking mean a lot of what we buy never makes it to the plate.
- The time. You cannot fast-track tender. Hours of slow cooking is the recipe, and it's the part people taste.
Cheap oxtail usually means one of those corners got cut — smaller portion, more bone than meat, or a braise that got rushed. We'd rather charge what it costs and give you the version worth ordering again.
